Each year the Gauntlet Trust gives around £250,000 in support of Materials Science education and research. Support is funded through our Materials Science Partnership which comprises four interlocking schemes: our own Materials Science Scheme and three jointly funded schemes with AWE, Materials Processing Institute and Rolls-Royce. These leading companies all share our commitment to encouraging young people to pursue careers in Materials Science. The Gauntlet Trust awards two prestigious mid-career prizes to recognise achievement in Materials Science. The Royal Academy of Engineering Armourers & Brasiers Prize and the Royal Society Armourers & Brasiers' Company Prize are offered in alternate years.
The following grant programmes are open to eligible applicants for as long as funds are available in each financial year ending 31st March:
To mark our 700th Anniversary in 2022 we made the largest donation in our history to endow the Armourers & Brasiers' Chair in Materials Science at Imperial College London.
In addition the Armourers & Brasiers' Company awards an annual Armourers & Brasiers Materials Science Venture Prize of £25,000 to support the commercialisation of promising research in Materials Science. The prize is given as an investment into the startup company.
The winner of the Venture Prize is announced at the Armourers & Brasiers Cambridge Forum.
